Rome was not built in a day…Maybe in 4 weeks?

eruption

Last week we started our journey through Rome; I had decided we would not be creating a MLB instead Logan would be constructing a replica of Pompeii. (his choice) The idea was to encourage Logan to stretch his love for building by not only erecting the Pompeii, but have him devise a plan, formulate a supply list and give me an estimated time of completion.  The completion time was the key since Logan can get lost in creating and forgo any type of time management (we could spend the entire year constructing Pompeii). I have also requested Logan draft two summaries; one on what we have read and the other describing his experience designing his masterpiece.  The second summary is the one that I am most looking forward to reading; this will be Logan’s first attempt articulating his feelings about the process he uses when creating one of his designs.

Spines we will be using:

Pompeii: Lost and Found by Mary Pope Osborne and Bonnie Christensen

Ancient Rome by Charles Kovacs

The Library of Alexandria by Kelly Trumble

City: A Story of Roman Planning and Construction by David Macaulay

Roman History by Christopherus (Donna Simmons)

Mom’s contribution to the block:

Try not to micromanage to allow the process to evolve naturally.

Please wish us both luck on this block:)

  1. Love the title to this post and the Steiner quote at the bottom.

And can I say, I also love the “mom’s contribution” part of your blocks this year. Isn’t it true that each block we do gives us a place to work on something specific within ourselves?? I’m going to have to think about that more and maybe adopt it.

Keep us updated with photos! Can’t wait to see what he makes.

  2. Of course you know I absolutely love this idea and I also love your mom’s contribution – I continually struggle with the micro-manager part of myself:) As for Logan – I have one thing I want you to pass on to him: POMPEII POWER!!!
    xoxo Alison
